One thing is certain about traveling in your RV – the Kitchen is always the busiest space. Meals and snacks and lounging all happen here for more hours of the day than you care to add up. This also makes it one the of the messiest and clutter spots in your temporary home. Organizing and maximizing this space is essential to a successful and fun filled road adventure.
Let’s start with under the kitchen sink then shall we?
Tricia has got you covered here.
This space can get quite clustered very quickly. Bins, dividers, and additional shelves create a space for all the essentials, and nothing gets thrown in randomly.
The Essentials of Great Kitchens
The center island is a drop-zone for all things. From meal prep to post meal plate bombs, this space catches everything. Not every camper has a center island, and that’s ok. They do all have sinks, and space saving solutions like this for them.
This handy little collapsable dish catcher goes in the sink and catches the wet dishes to dry, in the sink and out of the way.
Another cheap and very helpful solution to break through the clutter are these cool drawer organizers.
They hold everything in place when you are moving so it doesn’t clang around and damage what’s next to it.
And they remind your teenagers (or who-ever pulled dish duty that night) that when you are putting the silverware away that doesn’t mean to just “turn the drying rack upside-down over the drawer.”
The Secondary Kitchen Areas
There’s more to a great kitchen than just cooking and cleaning. In a bunk-house camper like this, this whole space is also for watching movies and playing games.
And electronics. AND all those charging cords and little accessories that you need for each and every one of them. Clear containers for each of these little clutter monsters are a must for your cabinets.
For the every day electronics that you need access to frequently, that back wall can add some organizing mojo to the party to.
Little stick-no clear bins can turn an boring back wall into an OCD’ers work of art.
Pro-tip for the big family: Colored charging cords can keep you from fist fighting when all the phones are dead at the same time. For some reason, they all die together – and you don’t have too to.
Pinch rods are must for all your cabinets in the kitchen and surrounding secondary areas. You don’t want your things pouring out at you every time you stop for a break or setup camp. Just pinch them down and keep them in each cabinet until you pack up again.
Another great space saving idea is to get those shoes, sandals, and other footwear out of the kitchen area all together. This one is rather genius if you ask me. The wall space at the foot of the bed can be used for shoe storage! Just hang up a cloth-style shoe organizer and slip them inside and out of the way.
One final word of advice: if it doesn’t have to be in the kitchen, it should be in there. Because this space is used for so many more tasks and activities than just food prep and service, it tends to be a catch all for a lot. Games, beach toys, and electronics get thrown in every crack and corner. Keep those things in adjacent bedrooms, closets, and bathrooms. Those spaces have plenty of opportunities to be organized and maximized too 🙂
